Introduction
The following poems, writings, stories, and letters by the author throughout a broad period ranging from 1991-2017. Some of the work reflects extended time spent in quiet observation, whether engaged in the exploration of nature or floating about on a surfboard in the ocean.
For much of the 1990s, the author journeyed regularly, often alone, to the remote deserts and isolated seacoasts of Baja California, Mexico, in order to surf, hike, and write in virtual seclusion. The mid-90s, specifically, was a period where the author delved deepest into his own inner nature. Again, it was quite often from the vantage point of the ocean, whereupon he rode countless thousands of waves and carefully examined his personal relationship to the natural and oceanic world. Throughout the years 1993-2004, the author traveled to some twenty countries throughout Europe, Asia, and
South America, both as a student of life, culture, and spirituality, and as a sort of wandering explorer. Much of the work included in The Heart of a Traveler reflects his unique explorations in searching the world, both within and without, for personal meaning and insight into the purpose of life itself.
